Education and care cannot be separated… We should educate while we care and care while we educate.

MAGDA GERBER

My approach relies on empathy, humor, and the three Rs of early care and education: responsiveness, reciprocity, and respect. For all my services, I prioritize relationship-based, identity-affirming, culturally responsive practices.

Services

  • Postpartum doulas offer physical and emotional support as well as unbiased, evidence-based information to new parents and their families. Learn more about the role of the postpartum doula here (scroll down to “Scope of Practice”).

While not a newborn care specialist, I am happy to also offer support that focuses mainly on newborn care.

  • If your child is entitled to a SEIT (Special Education Itinerant Teacher) or SETSS (Special Education Teacher Support Services), I can help at school or in your home. I am also available for private tutoring. My areas of expertise include:

    • Explicit, systematic, phonogram-based literacy instruction informed by the science of reading

    • Social-emotional learning

    • Self-regulation and executive functioning

    • Gross motor challenges

    • Self-care and adaptive skills

My teaching is play-based, constructivist, and connection-centered. I use direct instruction to teach reading, writing, and math. My reading instruction in particular is multisensory, dynamic, and tailored to the student.

Please note that I am qualified to teach children from birth to second grade. With few exceptions, children should be close to age 5 before I will begin reading instruction. For parents who would like to support their younger children with their literacy development, I am happy to provide tips for developing phonemic awareness and print awareness.

  • I have decades of experience providing exceptional caregiving for families in their homes. In this capacity, I am particularly interested in working with families with marginalized identities.

  • Parenting can be one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences in a person’s life. If you seek guidance or have questions about your child’s development, I can offer support with:

    • Discipline

    • Toileting

    • Feeding and sleep challenges

    • Routines and daily rhythms

Whatever your concern, I am here to support you, your child, and your family.

These sessions may happen remotely or in person.

  • I am currently teaching art and play classes at Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan. I am also a practicum student in Dr. Christina Cohen’s RIE® Certified classes at Union Square Play. I also occasionally host open plays in Upper Manhattan.

Please get in touch if you are interested in providing a space to host a class or if you would like to stay in the loop.
